How to: Turkish Get Up

The Turkish Get Up! Most run at the sound of this – but in if you actually just focus, slow it down and learn each phase, you can breeze through them!

I like to start with teaching a few keywords that emphasis each phase. For wording, the Kettlebell will be in our RIGHT hand and our RIGHT foot will be cocked to the side. Our LEFT hand is flat and 45 degrees to our body and our LEFT leg is straight.

  • ELBOW
    • Drive your RIGHT foot into the ground as you punch into a situp and drive your LEFT elbow into the floor.
  • HAND
    • Simply maintain your RIGHT foot on the ground and push from your LEFT elbow to your hand.
  • HIPS
    • Drive your hips up by pushing your RIGHT heel into the ground hard and allowing your hips to raise.
  • SLIDE YOUR SIDE FOOT
    • Once your hips are up, lay your LEFT foot sideways with the outside of it on the ground, and drag your LEFT foot towards your RIGHT foot, then continue behind you until you LEFT knee can be placed on the ground.
  • TALL KNEELING
    • Once your LEFT knee is on the ground, remove your LEFT hand from the ground and come to a kneeling position.
  • STAND UP
    • Stand up all the way and bring your feet side by side!

HOORAY! You did it! Kidding. You gotta go down now! But coming down is easier, it is literally the exact opposite. We wont go into details, as you can reference above, just go in the opposite order.

A few tips!

  • Keep your eyes on that kettlebell!
    • This will balance your better.
  • Your shoulder is now the center of your body.
    • You shoulder joint will twist and turn as you move – let it be the focus point.
  • DONT RUSH!
    • If you feel unstable pause for a second, control then continue.
  • Go SLOW until you have mastered it.
    • Form will increase speed.
