Climbing a rope isn’t as bad as it seems – the worst part honestly is the rope burn on your shin (which can be done away with easily)! In reality, everyone thinks the rope climb is a ton of upper body strength – it really relies on your ability to manipulate your feet and use your core as well as ‘stand up’ while using the rope as the floor. Your upperbody is mainly there to hold onto the rope.
Two things to really practice and nail down when trying to learn how to climb a rope.
- Establish a FIRM J-Hook
- Without it, you will be relying a ton on your upper body. This is great for those trying to develop legless rope climbs!
- Really think about pushing down with the top foot and up with the bottom foot to create a firm anchor once you have the rope in the J-Hook position around your main foot.
- Re-stablishing a J-Hook when in a Knees to Chest Position on the rope.
- In order to actually climb the rope, you have to be able to pull your knees to your chest and establish a J-Hook while in an odd position.
